Grooming
Grooming, grooming, grooming
Grooming is essential for a Goldie. It is also something which you can enjoy doing with your dog. Try to find the combs and brushes which suit your dogs’ coat as this will affect the end result greatly. Once your have mastered grooming, it is also important to consider trimming your dogs coat for maintenance purposes.
There are two types of scissors, straight edged scissors and thinning scissors.
We have found that cutting the hair on the underneath on the dogs paws which erupts in between the pads with straight edged scissors brings less dirt into the house. Then cutting around each pad provides for a neater foot.
Trimming the tail into a rudder shape of 12cm in length maximum with straight edged scissors keeps it out of the way. Carefully cutting into the chest in the form of a V shape from each shoulder down to the chest bone with thinning scissors keeps the chest hair manageable and tidy. We found that leaving the chest uncut caused mats and an unpleasant smell.
Cutting the excess hair on the ears and on the pasterns with thinning scissors provides for an all round neater appearance. Nails also need to be kept short so the foot does now splay out and look untidy. When cutting nails, look for the quick, and be sure not to cut into it as this causes bleeding.
