Some tips on house training
It is not uncommon for occasional accidents to occur up to 8 months in some dogs. A puppy does have strong instincts not to toilet where he sleeps so you can take advantage of this. Puppies will usually want to urinate after sleeping or feeding, so you will need to take him outside. It is a good idea to have a word to use to make the dog go to the toilet. Say it when he goes to the toilet so he can associate with it. It is nice to have a biscuit ready to praise him for being good.
Punishment does not work with toilet training- fact. If you punish your puppy for toileting indoors, he will start to feel anxious about going around you and this will hinder your progress as he will do it in private. If the pup begins to go to the toilet inside, make a noise to startle him and take him outside and carry on as above.
You need to keep areas which you do not wish to be associated as the toilet clear of urine or the pup will think that it is the place to go.
“Chastising your puppy over mistakes made in the house will only make him try to do things out of your sight. A puppy cannot know right from wrong. If he isn’t understanding something, then you are not explaining it properly.”
