Saffie is confirmed in whelp to Baloo and puppies are expected on the 19/02/2008.
Saffie's puppies were born three days early on the 16 February 2008. There are seven boys and two girls. It was quite a surprise that she was in labour as she had been for a walk only a short time before and everything was fine, then we began to see the first puppy.
Unfortunately all was not well. Although Saf was trying really hard she couldn't seem to push the puppy out. So after an hour, we called the vet and he said wait 30 minutes and then see what's happening, the puppy had not moved so we took her to the vet. It turned out that her vulva was not dilating and therefore the puppy could not be pushed out. She under went an emergency caesarean and out came nine puppies! There would have been ten but for this complication. The vet said there was no way of knowing of such a problem and that he in fact had never heard of such a case in pet animals. It only tends to occur in textbooks regarding farm animals. The vet even asked if she was kept outside!
Due to this abnormality Saf won’t be bred from again, which is a shame, the vet said she was a perfect patient! We also enquired as to whether such a condition is genetic and he said that it would not be!
